In our current first (western) world, self-care appears to be a cultural subtlety. But think of the spa. What we think of as a luxurious experience featuring plush robes, cucumber eyes, and large gratuities is actually a far more casual affair around the world. The public bathhouse has been a cultural staple since it was the hot social spot in ancient Rome, and it’s been reinterpreted as an exotic blue lagoon in the northern Atlantic, and a mainstay in technologically-pulsing cities like Seoul, even to this day; so much so that the jimjilbang (the Korean term for spa) is a 24-hour epicenter for people of all ages. Imagine going to a spa for some R&R only to see a swarm of children running about – it happens all the time in Korea. what is a body scrub at a spa

I first became aware of the bathhouse fad after hearing that more were springing up in New York City, making them more accessible to the 99 percent of the population. The concept of paying one flat cost for an all-day pass was particularly popular in Korean bathhouses. Even though I can’t handle the severe conditions of either for more than 20 minutes at a time, the concept of spending all day to relax in numerous saunas, steam rooms, and hydrotherapy pools seemed like such a beautiful playground to me. The wonderful thing about Korean spas is that they have whole eateries inside and napping places because they expect guests to remain for lengthy periods of time. It’s pure delight to steam, sauna, dine, and nap.

Even setting aside time to unwind might be unpleasant when you’re a gainfully employed adult working in the cruelly fast-paced world of journalism. That’s why a visit to the newly established Sojo Spa Club in Edgewater, NJ was a no-brainer. I’d heard about the overcrowding in Manhattan and Queens bathhouses, and because Sojo was new and out there, I figured it’d be a good small getaway. Depending on traffic, it’s only around a 40-minute journey from the city.

The Full Body Scrub was my request. And, yes, I know it’s winter, but skin doesn’t stop shedding just because it’s cold outside (quite the opposite, unfortunately), and I could use a little shine with all my sweater layers and lax showering schedule (what, I don’t sweat as much in winter, don’t judge me), so

Dear reader, famous final words. Before I get into the gruesome details, let me just say that I emerged from the 90-minute session looking like a goddamn dolphin, smoother than marble, and potentially even Victoria’s Secret angel come runway time for the VS Fashion Show. Gisele (*looks around before whispering*) is smoother.

But first, let me take you back to the beginning of the process. The 90-minute body scrub (there are also 60-minute and 30-minute options) included not just a head-to-toe exfoliation, but also a shampoo, massage, and a cucumber facial (all for $125). I went to the scrub booths at one end of the bath area after enough sauna hopping and was greeted by a lovely elderly Korean lady dressed modestly in a black two-piece wet-zone suit. She dumped a bucket of warm water over me as I lay naked on a vinyl-covered massage table, a folded hand towel over my eyes, slapped on some body oil, and then put a folded hand towel over my eyes, as if I were a recently caught sea bass on the deck of a ship.

Then there were the mitts. Do you have one of those 99-cent store scrubby cloths? Most Asian youngsters would identify them as “Italy towels,” which are Kermit green (or sometimes red) with sporty black stripes on one side. They were the nightmare of bath time when my mother would scrub the living daylights out of me, but they appear to be ageless since they are still a Korean spa mainstay. Let me tell you, those mittens don’t miss a single crevice. Not a single one. This is not a treatment for the faint of heart. It’s not painful, but it’s quite active. If you want to call it that, it’s a gentle man-handling. My attendant guided me gently, elevating my arms and legs as needed to really get into those areas that, to be honest, I had no idea needed exfoliation. Buttcrack? I got a good scrubbing. Do you have a thigh crease (you know where it is)? Scrubbed. What about your armpits, between your toes and fingers, ankles, and behind your ears? All of them have been cleaned.

I could see the super-sized gray eraser dust sprinkled around me as she went over my extremities, torso, neck, and chest a few times (having your boobs forcefully washed feels about as charming as it sounds, by the way). That was the remains of my dead skin. Because so much of me was strewn about, it’s not unreasonable to assume that I’d diminished in size by some margin. My attendant massaged on body oil and wrung out the knots in my back, neck, and legs after a full hour of being scrubbed over and over and a couple more water bucket throws, which was heavenly in that satisfyingly painful manner. After an hour and a half, she applied a cucumber facial mask to my face while washing my hair (yes, even your scalp is exfoliated) and then sent me on my way.

In a doughy stupor, I tottered away to shower and get dressed. Sojo Spa offers a handful of cafes on site, as well as a complete restaurant, where I enjoyed a delicious Korean supper of dduk mandu guk (a rice cake dumpling soup). You can even stay the night there if you don’t want to worry about driving home after being properly steamed, baked, and kneaded – a tempting offer after being thoroughly wrung out.

Despite this, I made it home and collapsed on my bed, unconcerned about the Monday that awaited me in the morning. It turns out that spending an entire Sunday at a bathhouse is a fantastic way to revitalize before the start of the work week. My skin felt CGI-level smooth, as noodle-y as my muscles felt. It felt like I was reacquainting myself with my own body on a surface level. I wasn’t particularly scraggly-skinned before, but now I felt like a whole different person.

“It is said that growing fully new skin cells takes seven years. To think, this year I’ll mature into a body you’ve never seen.”

It is, after all, mid-February, hint hint. A Korean body scrub is quite probably the most efficient way to literally scrub away any residual harsh sentiments, if you catch my drift, if not only for the smoothest skin of your life.
